In this blog, our experts at Peterlee Glass explain why toughened glass is so widely-used, its main uses and the key benefits for businesses.
What is toughened glass?
Toughened glass, also known as tempered or safety glass, is five times stronger than regular glass. It is also up to 500 times more resistant to heat and shock.
It is formed by passing annealed glass through a specially designed oven which takes the glass temperature to near melting point. Compared with standard annealed glass, toughened glass provides far greater mechanical strength and offers controlled fracturing to prevent shards in the event of breakage. This means it is much less likely to cause injury than regular glass.
Its properties mean that toughened glass is useful in applications requiring greater strength and safety, both inside and outside. It is frequently used for glass floors, balconies and partitions in commercial spaces, such as within offices, shopping centres and entertainment venues. You’ll also find it used for shop front facades and wall covering in restaurants, hotels, shops and offices.
Safety is the most important benefit of toughened glass - you can be confident that it can withstand high impact and that even if it were to break, the way in which it breaks into small, circular pieces instead of sharp shards means there is reduced risk of injury.
When used in offices for partitions, toughened glass is effective in allowing more natural light into the environment, making the office feel more spacious. It can provide privacy while maintaining this airy, open feel, if tinted or frosted glass is used to surround meeting rooms.
Of course, toughened glass is also aesthetically pleasing and lends a sleek, modern look to a commercial space. Its smooth, uniform and glossy appearance makes it easy to install and maintain.
Crucially, it is cost-efficient too. Due to its strength, it won’t need to be replaced anytime soon, and it will help you retain a modern look for years to come.
Highly resistant to heat, thermal shock and UV resistant, it is the ideal choice for your commercial applications. If you would like to know more, please contact us on 0191 586 4626 or send us an enquiry here.
